A supracondylar humerus fracture is a fracture of the distal humerus just above the elbow joint. The fracture is usually transverse or oblique and above the medial and lateral condyles and epicondyles. This fracture pattern is relatively rare in adults, but is the most common type of elbow fracture in children.

14.1) is a grave injury which for years represented an unsolved problem in trauma, and was considered to result almost always in varying degrees of permanent disability. It was felt that the fate of the joint was determined by the injury rather than by its treatment. The most common cause of a fracture is direct trauma to the leg from an automobile accident or a fall. Supracondylar fractures are most common in patients who suffer from osteoporosis or have had total knee replacement surgery. Symptoms Treatment of supraintercondylar (AO/OTA 33-C) and supracondylar (AO/OTA 33-A) femur fractures is generally challenging.

Supracondylar fracture is a fracture at area of the femur at the zone between the femoral condyles and the junction of the metaphysis with the femoral shaft. The femur is the largest and strongest bone in the body. It take a great deal of force to break the thigh bone. There are different kinds of breaks, from simple to serious. Introduction: Open supracondylar femur fractures are rare, complex injuries which occur in polytrauma patients and are complicated by bone loss, contamination, compromised soft tissues, and poor host condition.

It account for Supracondylar femur fractures require anatomically stable internal fixation for best results, which usually necessitates surgical treatment. These fractures usually occur in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities and osteoporotic bone; thus, a high rate of complications exists.

Surgical treatment of supracondylar/intercondylar distal femur fractures remains a significant surgical challenge, with high complication rates. Adverse events include infection, decreased range of motion, need for bone grafting, malunion, and nonunion.

Newman Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol, UK Introduction Fractures at the upper end of the femur are occurring with ever-increasing frequency and have now reached epidemic proportions (Boyce and Vessey, 1985; Zetterberg et al., 1984). Introduction: Open supracondylar femur fractures are rare, complex injuries which occur in polytrauma patients and are complicated by bone loss, contamination, compromised soft tissues, and poor host condition. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate a successful treatment protocol for these challenging injuries. Femur is commonly fractured after accidents. In carefully chosen patients treated with appropriate surgical technique, early motion and good knee function can be obtained with open reduction and internal fixation. Distal femoral fractures pose a difficult problem for the surgeon with significant complication rates and generally unsatisfactory results. 1,2 These fractures usually result from a high energy injury in the young or a fall in the elderly. As a result, they are typically comminuted or involve osteoporotic bone.

Farlex Partner Medical Dictionary © Farlex 2012. 2016-10-04 2020-04-15 Supracondylar fractures of femur have a bimodal age distribution, with a high incidence in young adults from high energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents and a second peak in elderly with minor fall [2,3]. They are often unstable and comminuted and tend to occur in elderly or multiply injured patients following road traffic accidents 3. Supracondylar fractures are the commonest fracture at the elbow in pediatric patients. They result from force applied across the elbow, usually following a fall. The supracondylar region is the weakest point in the developing elbow and therefore is commonly injured. The femur is the largest and strongest bone in the body, so it takes tremendous force to cause a fracture.
